Brambles

This weekend we had both master C and miss F and her partner Flo back for the weekend, Master C left Sunday afternoon and Miss F and Flo this morning but before they did a bit of work was completed.

All over the farm we have brambles growing, some are good that give us blackberries, although these  are now beginning to get a bit out of hand and are in need of a harsh cut back the other brambles we have do no give fruit only hard work and torn arms from removing them. They grow to a certain point when we can stand them no longer or they get in the way and look unsightly this is the time we say enough and start to cut them back. Monday morning farmer J started to hack away with his machete the brambles along the road side near our barn to recover an electric cable which they had grown over. In doing so he unearthed old metal farm machinery.

Bearing in mind we have now been here ten years this is the first time it had been seen buried under earth (there is a lot of old bits of machinery and junk buried under earth here that keeps on cropping up). As an extra male pair of hands were around they were called upon revealing an old harrow, which has a few bits missing. Now farmer J has a 'dont throw anything away head' it has been pulled out to see if other bits can be welded to make it into a useful again.

On the other side of the house down by our first gites garden I had started work on weeding and cutting back the brambles behind a small bed. Miss F and Flo came to help and got a bit carried away removing all the brambles that lined a stone wall which had got very out of hand and I'm so grateful they did for I have done this quiet a few times now and it is a horrible job, while they worked from the bottom I concentrated on the top down.

Brambles all cleared and weeding finished this afternoon they just need to be loaded ready for the tip. Oh and the job of clearing the roots may begin before they get a hold again in this part, now onto opposite the wall between the grass and field..............

Happy cattle

For five months the cattle have been eating hay twice a day but today was their time to go back to pasture, they were more than ready. With two loads in the trailer going to La Contie the rest, the naughty but nice ones stayed at La Singlarie. Calves are on green grass for the first time following the herds around. Now for Spring time jobs to get started - so much free time for farmer J. Fencing, tidying around the farm, getting machines ready for hay cutting, getting the gites gardens ready for Summer and a new bathroom to fit, his feet won't be touching the ground.

Rabbit proof fence

In the hope of not loosing anymore greenery in the veggie patch today was spent today taking down an old fence which was put up around eight years ago. As it had a few holes in it this could be where  the rabbits are getting through. On the other side of the fence a chicken run was constructed were table chickens grew to a really good weight until we got a batch that had been, what we think were contagious with Mareks disease. Subsequently we stopped using it for chickens putting a litter of pigs in the area to get them use to electric fencing (which they did). It has been left empty for around 18months now with Gorgon and the girls have made break trough's through it last year gaining access into the veggie patch but now there's a lot of weeds. On the other side of the veggie patch is another old holey fence which has now got the recycled one that was taken down put in front of it, new posts and a trench dug to lower the wire in, earthed up and stones put on top
