Busy, busy, busy

Some weeks or maybe that should be days are quiet here, if the rain is pouring outside jobs can't be done and inside ones need to be found. Other times it gets very busy with everything needing to be done at the same time, this week is one of those. It has been wet and cold a bit of relief form not worrying that I am so behind in the veggie patch as I think its probably too wet and cold for little seeds to go in the ground. No planting this week, farmer J has promised to help next week moving manure and rotivating it in. Fence posts are waiting to be pointed, wood needs to be cut up and piled neatly to be seasoned ready for winter, weeds are growing under the pigs electric fencing that needs cutting. A list is on the horizon, farmer J loves his lists I don't!

The start of a week the next pig to go went with butchering, packing and sausages made and packed this morning only to do tomorrow is slice and pack the bacon.

The piglets have been separated from mum so now waiting to go in their own enclosure. They have grown enough that it is not going to be possible to individual move them via a crate. It's going to be a trailer job, moving it up to the pen at the weekend for them to get use to it before moving up the hill. The trailer had been in use for the boeuf until yesterday when he went to the abattoir, as he had been trained to have his cereal in the trailer each morning and night he wasn't stressed as the ramp was shut with him inside.

The pot bellied pigs have been very busy this morning tidying the sheep's shelter, moving the hay into a pile.
While farmer J milled cereal for the week and cleaned the cows hanger out I started to clean the chickens barn ready for 30 chicks arriving tomorrow where I  will pick them up from the fowl van in La Fouillade.
While cleaning out the barn I had left the laying chickens house door open from when I moved them in with the old birds enabling them to be free range. One  or two of those chickens must of been visiting their old house as I found 26 eggs while cleaning. All recently laid with only a few rising to the top of a bucket of water when checking to see if they are fresh.they will go to the pigs as we have many eggs.

As I went to the top barn to fetch straw for the chicks pen  there was another 15! Pigs will be having their protein levels increased for a few days.

A quick dash to Parisot to pick up old boys medication, no not farmer J's, insulin for Franklin form the vets and eye drops for Milo from the chemist before french conversation group.
I returned to find the pot bellied two fast asleep, after having tea they must of returned there for when shutting the barn door for the night they were not in their usual sleeping quarters only Gorgon was shuffling about, leaving them till later all three are camping out tonight as I've just closed the barn door on them as they sleep uner a pile of hay, not sure the sheep will be impressed.

Happy cattle

For five months the cattle have been eating hay twice a day but today was their time to go back to pasture, they were more than ready. With two loads in the trailer going to La Contie the rest, the naughty but nice ones stayed at La Singlarie. Calves are on green grass for the first time following the herds around. Now for Spring time jobs to get started - so much free time for farmer J. Fencing, tidying around the farm, getting machines ready for hay cutting, getting the gites gardens ready for Summer and a new bathroom to fit, his feet won't be touching the ground.

Rabbit proof fence

In the hope of not loosing anymore greenery in the veggie patch today was spent today taking down an old fence which was put up around eight years ago. As it had a few holes in it this could be where  the rabbits are getting through. On the other side of the fence a chicken run was constructed were table chickens grew to a really good weight until we got a batch that had been, what we think were contagious with Mareks disease. Subsequently we stopped using it for chickens putting a litter of pigs in the area to get them use to electric fencing (which they did). It has been left empty for around 18months now with Gorgon and the girls have made break trough's through it last year gaining access into the veggie patch but now there's a lot of weeds. On the other side of the veggie patch is another old holey fence which has now got the recycled one that was taken down put in front of it, new posts and a trench dug to lower the wire in, earthed up and stones put on top
