With mixed weather of sun and rain mornings have looked like this, normally Autumnal weather leaves beautiful mists in the valley but this year it has been the coolest and wettest summer since we moved here nearly ten years ago.
Wednesday morning when feeding the pigs we only had six in a enclosure when there should be seven, overnight we lost one. Normally there is evidence of an escape - digging under the electric fence, the fence out of its hooks, hoof prints and earth dug up as they forage but there was no signs at all. It's just vanished. To find a black small pig where we are surrounded by woods is a bit like searching for a needle in a hay stack, we are hoping its still near, neighbours heard pig noises yesterday evening so it may find its way back. Empty enclosures have been left open with food and bread ( the bread has gone?). Sandy our sow went missing for four days when we first got her after being scared of the other two sows she came to us with returning on her own accord. Our only fear is hunting season starts very soon.
With so much rain the veggie patch is going wild including the weeds that will not stop growing, great for the pigs as they do like a weed or two to munch on. Fruit and veg is keeping us going, now working through those courgette recipes.
The fallen damson tree has managed to stay alive with no cows or donkeys in the field the damson have been left, the easiest plum picking ever.
Good mushroom weather we went a hunting, no ceps (yet) but the trumpet de mort which we usually find in the Autumn are already out, we manged to find enough of them and girolles for lunch with pasta.
Friday evening we went up to Najac for a meal at a new restaurant in the village, L'air du temps a tasty three courses after we left just in time before the rain came. The thunder had been clapping and lightning flashing with the sky going very dark. Big spots of rain fell on the windscreen on the way back, by the time we were home it was chucking it down, a very noisy storm with heavy rain left a casualty in the morning. Farmer J was so glad it fell towards the field and not on the road otherwise he would of spent Saturday with a chainsaw with me moving the twigs.
