Sometimes there are not enough hours in the day here. So much needs to be done and with the weather heating up it gets hard to work in the mid day sun even though we are English !
So today while farmer J finished lining up the last hay field we, that being myself, Master C for his muscles and Miss F for her cheery helpfulness were set to work using farmer J's Toy. It's an electric mill used for milling up the organic mixed cereal we buy in locally.
A mix of wheat, oats, peas and beans it is mainly given to the pigs and chickens with the sheep given a handful each day to keep them happy. The past six weeks the next steer who will be going to the abattoir very soon has been given two kilos a day morning and night.
Stored in these big bags of around a 600kg a time once milled it is put kept in bins (to try and keep the mice out)
Pigs have cereal milled to a fine flour which they digest better than the chickens who have theirs coarser.
It all starts off being fed into the top.
Passes through these knives and grate.
To come out ground. This job is done once a week, ear defenders are worn as it is noisy and masks to stop inhaling the dust.
Some work harder than others.
